Christopher White, from Dublin, Ireland, demonstrated his version of a ‘Beauty of Flowers’ and he did not disappoint, despite the extra organisation needed by the Committee. Garden foliage was picked from Committee members’ gardens, flowers ordered and collected from local suppliers and containers borrowed from friends. Surprisingly quickly the stage became filled with arrangements full of colour and texture while Christopher regaled us with stories of his travels and competitions such as Chelsea where he obtained a silver gilt medal and Dublin where he achieved a gold. He also gave us new tips on how to manipulate phormium leaves and suggested putting egg shells into pots of aspidistra leaves to make them variegated (they also don’t like the sun which why the Victorians did so well with them). The evening was very successful and there were many disappointed people who did not win a raffle prize. Christopher closed the evening by thanking everyone for their help with the preparation for the demonstration. (Margaret Miller)
